Last week, I finally took a flight to Jeju Island. To be honest, this island had been on my travel list for several years, but I kept putting it off. This time, I decided to go directly, and yet as soon as I arrived, I regretted not coming sooner. In this article, I share my experiences with you who are planning a trip to Jeju Island. It includes information about the local weather, must-see attractions, shopping routes, accommodation recommendations, and some tips for independent travelers. I hope it will be helpful to you.

Actual photos of the coastal scenery in Jeju Island

Current weather conditions on Jeju Island today: Temperature and humidity in June – what clothes should you bring?

In June, Jeju Island officially enters the pre-monsoon season, and the climate becomes humid and hot. During the day, the maximum ONDO reaches around 25°C, but with a humidity level of 85%, the actual perceived temperature is closer to 29°C – you will start sweating after just a few steps. The sun is very strong, and the UV index exceeds 7.2 (which is extremely high), so sun protection is essential.

On average, there are 21 rainy days this month, but these usually take the form of sudden showers rather than continuous rain. My advice is to bring a folding umbrella with you whenever you go out and adjust your plans according to the weather. At night, the temperature remains around 21°C, which is quite comfortable and perfect for strolling around and enjoying meals in the downtown area of Jeju.

project Data Travel recommendations
The highest temperature during the day 25°C (feeling like 29°C) Just wear a short-sleeved shirt with a light jacket on top.
Minimum nighttime temperature 21°C Outdoor activities in the evening are truly delightful.
Number of rainy days About 13 days Essential folding umbrella
Daily sunlight exposure About 8 hours Depart for the scenic spots in the morning and avoid the scorching sun in the afternoon.
Humidity 85% (extremely humid) Priority should be given to moisture-proof and quick-drying clothing.
Ultraviolet rays 7.2 (Very high) Essential for SPF50+ sun protection
ONDO of seawater 22°C It’s suitable for swimming, but the water is a bit cool.

Baggage recommendations: short-sleeved T-shirts, sun-protective jackets (also wind-resistant), quick-drying pants, foldable umbrellas, SPF50+ sunscreen, and anti-fog glasses (fogging is common in high-humidity environments).

Beaches and coasts of Jeju Island

Must-visit attractions for independent travelers in Jeju Island: I visited several of them during this trip, and each one was definitely worth it.

There are so many attractions on Jeju Island that it’s actually difficult to decide which ones to visit. This time, I divided my trip into three sections: the east coast, the south coast, and the west coast, and it took me approximately 3 days to see them all. Here are the attractions that I actually visited and thought were absolutely worth experiencing:

① Seongsan Ilchulbong (Mount Seongsan at Sunrise) – A World Natural Heritage site; missing out on this means you haven’t truly visited Jeju.

Sunrise Peak at Seongsan is the most iconic landmark on the east side of Jeju Island. Standing at an altitude of 180 meters, it is a volcanic crater that juts out from the sea surface. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the summit. The trail is not particularly difficult, but the slope is steep, so remember to wear anti-slip shoes if it rains. From the top, you can enjoy an unobstructed 360-degree view of the entire sea and grasslands. I took almost 100 photos of this breathtaking scene, yet I still felt like I couldn’t get enough of it.

  • Admission fee: ₩5,000 for adults (approximately NT$115/HK$30).
  • Opening hours: 30 minutes after sunrise to 1 hour before sunset (subject to seasonal adjustments)
  • Recommended duration: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Transportation: It takes about 1 hour to take a bus from the downtown area of Jeju City, or you can rent a car and go directly there.

② Udō — A small island within Jeju Island, perfect for a half-day tour.

It takes about 15 minutes to reach Udo Island by ferry from Seongsan Port. This small island is a must-visit destination on the east side of Jeju Island. Electric bicycles are the most popular means of transportation on the island, and a round trip takes approximately 2 to 3 hours. The white sand beaches here have crystal-clear water that allows you to see the bottom. Peanut ice cream is a local specialty that you definitely shouldn’t miss.

  • Ferry fare: Round-trip price is ₩14,900 (approximately NT$340).
  • Electric bicycle rental: ¥915,000–¥920,000 for 2 hours
  • Tip: It’s better to go on weekdays, as there are usually many people on weekends. Please check in advance about the last ferry service in the evening.

③ Hanra Mountain — Perfect for travelers in good physical shape

Hanna Mountain is the highest peak in South Korea (with an elevation of 1,950 meters). There are several routes available for climbing it, but the Seongbanbok route is the most popular. The round-trip distance is approximately 9.5 kilometers, and it takes 4 to 5 hours to complete. If you just want to take a walk and enjoy the scenery without attempting to reach the summit, visiting the area near the shelter at an altitude of 1,300 meters is also absolutely breathtaking.

  • Admission: Free of charge
  • Note: Access to the mountain (Chengban Yue route) is prohibited after 2 pm. Remember to set off early.
  • Recommended equipment: hiking shoes, sufficient water, and a lightweight raincoat.

④ Cheonjiyeon Waterfall & Jeongbang Waterfall

Cheonchi Falls and Jeongbang Falls are the two most famous waterfall attractions in the southern part of Jeju Island. Jeongbang Falls is the only waterfall in South Korea that flows directly into the sea, and its views make for stunning photographs. The two attractions are approximately 2 kilometers apart, so a southern route tour allows visitors to see them both in one go. Additionally, a visit to the nearby Seogwipo city area to enjoy some seafood makes for a perfect day.

Urban street views in Jeju Island

Recommended shopping routes in Jeju Island: These are the must-visit places in the new urban area of Jeju City

In Jeju Island, shopping and dining activities are mainly concentrated in the “New Jeju” area, where there are numerous cafes, shopping streets, and local restaurants, making it ideal for a leisurely half-day stroll.

Liandong Shopping Street (연동 쇼핑거리)

Liandong is the core shopping district of New Jeju Island, home to Lotte Department Store, E-MART, as well as many local fashion brands and gift shops. Here, you can find a wide range of ANEW-exclusive products from Jeju Island. Some of the top recommendations include snacks related to Hanna Mountain oranges (such as orange chocolate, orange candy, and orange tea), black pork products, and souvenirs themed around Jeju’s mermaids.

Jeju Folklore Five-Day Market (제주시 민속오일시장)

The folk five-day markets held on the 2nd and 7th of each month are the best places to experience the authentic local life of Jeju Island. You can find fresh seafood, locally produced agricultural products, and various specialty snacks – most of the items sold here are what locals buy in their daily lives. Even if you don’t buy anything, just walking around and taking a look is definitely worth it.

A street full of cafes in the old town of Jeju

The coffee culture on Jeju Island has developed rapidly. In the narrow streets of the old town, there are many independently run cafes with stunning design, many of which feature local ingredients from Jeju. Orange latte, orange soda, and Hanna Peak juice are some of the most representative local specialties – you must try them when you visit.

Local delicacies and beverages in Jeju Island

Recommendations for hotels in Jeju Island: A variety of options to suit different budgets – I’ve sorted them out for you.

On Jeju Island, there is a wide range of accommodation options, ranging from luxury five-star hotels to budget-friendly backpacker hostels. June is the peak tourist season, so prices tend to be higher than usual; it is recommended to book your place 2–3 weeks in advance.

Hotel accommodation options in Jeju Island

Luxury Options (Starting from ₩300,000 per night / NT$6,800+)

  • Lotte Hotel Jeju: Friendly to Chinese guests, equipped with all necessary facilities. The Chinese Street is right nearby, making travel extremely convenient.
  • Haevichi Hotel & Resort: A resort hotel located on the east side of Jeju Island, featuring its own golf course and ocean views – perfect for families or honeymooners.
  • Shilla Jeju Hotel: Featuring stunning views of Seogwipo Bay, this hotel is ideal for travelers whose itineraries focus on the southern part of the island.

Mid-range budget (₩100,000–₩200,000 per night / NT$2,300–NT$4,600)

  • Ramada by Wyndham Jeju: Located in the heart of Anew Jeju City, with convenient transportation and a wide range of breakfast options.
  • Ocean Suites Jeju Hotel: boasts excellent views and a great value for money; the sea-view rooms offer exceptionally wide panoramas.
  • PIC Jeju (Pacific Island Club Jeju): A family-friendly resort with an aqua park and an outdoor swimming pool – perfect for taking kids along.

Affordable and cost-effective (₩50,000–₩100,000 per night / NT$1,150–NT$2,300)

  • Homestays in the urban area of New Jeju: There are many highly rated options on Airbnb or Booking.com, mostly located in areas near the dining districts that can be reached on foot.
  • Business hotels near the CBD in Jeju City: There are numerous business hotels available near the airport, making them particularly convenient for those arriving late at night or departing early in the morning.

Some tips for choosing accommodation: If your itinerary focuses mainly on the eastern coast (Chengshan, Niudao), staying near Chengshan will save you time on transportation; if you plan to visit the entire island, staying in the downtown area of Sinjeju is the most convenient option.

Transportation and budget planning for a self-guided trip to Jeju Island

The public transportation on Jeju Island is not as convenient as that in Seoul, so renting a car is highly recommended for independent travelers. If you hold a driving license from Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Macau, you can drive directly on Jeju Island (you will need to exchange it for an international driving license in advance). The cost of renting a car ranges from approximately ₩50,000 to ₩910,000 per day, and fuel costs are additional.

When traveling to Jeju Island, it’s also worth taking the opportunity to receive some Dermatology treatments.

Let me share an unexpected discovery I made this time: There are several Dermatology clinics on Jeju Island, and the quality of their services is quite high. Many of them have staff who can communicate in Chinese or English. Compared to Seoul, these clinics on Jeju Island have fewer patients and shorter waiting times, making them an excellent option for a “travel + dermatology” combination, especially suitable for travelers who want to take care of their skin during their vacation.

📌 Summary of a self-guided trip to Jeju Island: In June, Jeju Island is warm, boasts beautiful scenery, and has significantly fewer tourists than Seoul. It is truly an excellent destination for travel. Just bring an umbrella, take proper sun protection measures, and book a car in advance – with that, half of your trip to Jeju Island is already guaranteed to be a success. As for the other half? Leave it to the delicious local cuisine and the random coastal paths you might discover along the way.
